CAPE PrioritiesCAPE priorities are organized into the following program areas. These are the areas where our energy is focused. Children's HealthIn the past, the regulation of environmental pollutants, when it has been based on human health concerns, has been carried out with the health of adults in mind. There was often no recognition that children are more exposed, and more vulnerable, to environmental pollutants. CAPE believes this is a critical issue and has been involved in education and activism in this area. Our Children's Environmental Health Project has been designed to be an online resource for health professionals and the public about children's health and the environment. ToxicsToxics encompasses several groups of environmental pollutants that have important human health effects. These are: pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, GMOs, metals, endocrine disruptors and consumer products. Climate ChangeThe warming of the earth's environment due to human activity is apparent to all, and the human health effects of global warming are starting to be noticed. CAPE has identified this as one of our priorities for several years now. Greening Health CareIn North America, the health care system is one of the biggest sources of environmental pollution. As health care providers, we have a particular responsibility to avoid harming human health, and should work to make our hospitals more environmentally sustainable. Regulatory ReformCAPE advocates for laws, standards and policies that will promote health through the protection of the environment and the prevention of environmental degradation. The organization works to strengthen regulation in Canada at federal, provincial and municipal levels, believing that a strong regulatory framework is necessary for ensuring a healthy environment. |
