Fossil Fuel Ads Make Us Sick! turns one year-old

This month the Fossil Fuel Ads Make Us Sick! campaign is celebrating its one year anniversary! In true Ad Ban fashion, we marked the day by turning up the heat on the federal government with the launch of a parliamentary e-petition. This is an exciting next step, as the federal government is required to respond to our demands.

We’ve been hard at work to make fossil fuel advertising a things of the past, and want to share some of our accomplishments :

  • 50+ print media hits, including in Toronto Star, The Financial Post, CBC, The Globe & Mail, and Global News, along with many other mentions on tv and radio
  • Eight op-eds published in outlets like The Hill Times, Policy Options, The Toronto Star, and La Presse
  • Three official greenwashing complaints against deceptive advertisements to the Competition Bureau of Canada and Advertising Standards Canada, two of which are now officially under investigation
  • Over 2.5 million people reached through our social media campaigns, with over 120,000 engagements and 32,000 link clicks
  • Lobbied 15+ members of parliament on the need for a fossil fuel ad ban and presented at the All-Party Climate Caucus to representatives of all major Canadian political parties
  • Launched a parliamentary petition, sponsored by MP John Aldag, which will lead to an official response from the federal government on the need for an advertising ban
  • World Health Organization (WHO) Public Health and Climate Director, Dr. Maria Neira, endorsed the need for a fossil fuel advertising ban
  • Launched a mini campaign to end Enbridge Gas sponsorship of Ottawa’s Winterlude festival
  • Launched three videos calling out the deceptive advertising of fossil fuel companies & raising public awareness of planetary health risks associated with fossil fuels
  • Worked in coalition over 30 NGOs and 35+ health organizations representing over 700,000 healthcare professionals
  • Presented at the Canada Pavilion and World Health Pavilion at COP27 in Egypt

We are just getting started and are excited about all that is to come in the year ahead!
