CAPE response to UN Secretary General call to ban fossil fuel advertising

Unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-waututh) Nations /Vancouver, June 5, 2024 — In response to the UN Secretary General António Guterres’ call for countries to ban advertising from fossil fuel companies, Dr. Melissa Lem, family physician and president of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment said:

“Two years ago, health professionals across Canada called on our government to ban health-harming fossil fuel ads. Today, on Clean Air Day, the UN Secretary-General has heeded this call and asked governments around the world to take the same action. We are asking our federal government to show global leadership and support Bill C-372. There is no place for fossil fuel ads on a heating planet. Regulating fossil fuel deception is imperative; our health systems are being over-run by the impacts of wildfires, heat, drought and more. It is unconscionable to try to build demand—often by using lies and disinformation—for the very products that are super-charging the climate crisis.”
