Saskatchewan Committee (anglais)

The Saskatchewan committee of Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE SK) is a passionate group of over 100 healthcare professionals devoted to protecting human and planetary health. Co-chaired by Dr. Murray Opdahl and Sabahat Saeed, our volunteers share the common belief that a healthy environment is fundamental to healthy communities.

We leverage our health expertise to advocate for evidence-based environmental solutions, such as phasing out coal power and greening healthcare and building standards

Because of systemic inequities, environmental problems disproportionately harm people with the fewest resources to adapt, including racialized communities, First Nations, and those with low incomes. Being part of CAPE amplifies our voices as trusted health messengers to address these environmental injustices.

Our Initiatives

CAPE SK has recently engaged in:

  • Opposing the provincial government’s decision to extend the lifespan of coal-fired power plants beyond 2030, advocating instead for a faster transition to clean energy to protect public health and the environment.
  • Strengthening green building standards to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in both new and existing buildings.
  • Mitigating the climate impacts of healthcare, including initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of anesthesia practices and to recycle personal protective equipment (PPE).
