Ottawa, Traditional, Unceded Territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People, November 4, 2025 – As the federal government is expected to announce new pollution pricing measures and methane regulations in today’s budget, new national polling commissioned by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) shows strong majority support (75%) for urgent climate action to protect health, and clear support (64.5%) for reducing methane emissions from oil and gas*.
The polling, titled Progressive voters want action on methane and wildfires, confirms that three in four people in Canada (75%) believe governments must act urgently to reduce the health risks of climate change. This is a ratio of more than four to one compared to those who say it’s not urgent. Among Liberal–NDP swing voters, that urgency rises to nearly nine in ten.
This broad demand for action extends to methane, a potent greenhouse gas and major contributor to smog and air pollution. Nearly two-thirds of people in Canada (64.5%) support stronger methane regulations, outnumbering those opposed by more than four to one, with support reaching almost 80% among Liberal–NDP swing voters.
“Properly regulating methane isn’t just good for the climate. It’s one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to prevent asthma attacks, heart disease, and premature deaths caused by polluted air. For the health of people across Canada and our climate, it’s long past time to enact new federal regulations reducing harmful oil and gas methane emissions,” said Dr. Stephen Wilton, Calgary-based cardiologist and Co-Chair of CAPE’s Alberta Regional Committee.
“The public clearly understands what doctors have been warning for years: climate change is already harming our health. People in Canada are living through smoke-filled summers, respiratory illnesses, and extreme heat, and they want governments to act with urgency to protect our air, water, and wellbeing. We urge the government to focus its climate investments on meaningful action that people in Canada want and need for their health,” added Dr. Wilton.
The online survey of 1,013 adults across Canada was conducted by Nanos Research from October 23 to 28, 2025.

*Important note to editors: slide 5 shows that climate change is a top priority for Canadians: 65.4% rate it as “important,” compared with 8.5% who rate it as “not important,” a ratio of more than seven to one. Among swing voters who might consider both Liberal and NDP candidates, the margin is even larger—76.5% view it as “important” versus just 1.7% as “not important,” a 45-to-1 ratio.
