Government’s attempted greenwashing of LNG is astounding

Vancouver – Unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-waututh) Nations – November 13, 2025 – In response to Ottawa fast-tracking another batch of new LNG infrastructure in British Columbia: (a) the $6-billion North Coast Transmission Line, for which the bulk of the electricity will go to the LNG sector, with some electricity also powering mines, ports, and residential demand, and (b) the American-owned Ksi Lisims LNG export project that will be built in Korea by Samsung Heavy Industries – the following individuals responded with economic, climate and health considerations:

Dr. Bethany Ricker, Nanaimo family physician and Co-Chair of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment BC Regional Committee said:  “Where does our health fit into the federal government’s designation of projects of national interest? The government’s attempted greenwashing of LNG is astounding. LNG is a fossil fuel that is driving climate change and harming human health at every stage of production – from extraction near local communities, through processing and transportation, to combustion abroad. No amount of publicly-funded green electricity powering this industry can undo the harm it causes. Canada’s healthcare system is already straining under the weight of climate-related illnesses. The LNG industry generates corporate profits for a few, mainly foreign actors, and it leaves long-term costs for everyone else.”
