‘Meet the Moment’ campaign reminds federal party leaders not to betray our kids

Ottawa | Traditional, Unceded Territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People | April 25, 2025Together with over 1,000 supporters and over 75 organizations across Canada, CAPE and Generation Squeeze are asking political leaders to ‘meet the moment’ this election by committing to act on growing climate risks and costs our kids stand to inherit.

The ‘Meet the Moment’ campaign seeks to push climate change onto the ballot in the run-up to the federal election. At the heart of the initiative is a detailed letter that outlines a comprehensive case in favour of pollution pricing and asks for party leaders to clarify their positioning on the issue.

The list of over 75 signatories supporting the letter includes groups from a wide range of sectors and geographies within Canada. Signatories are drawn from sectors that cover health, social justice, faith-based advocacy, the arts, education and the environment. Signatories include Canada-wide organizations (e.g., Canadian Medical Association, Climate Action Network Canada, Council of Canadians, Canadian Public Health Association); Indigenous-led organizations (e.g., Keepers of the Water); and local or regional groups from a number of provinces and cities (e.g., Équiterre, Clean Air Partnership, Calgary Climate Hub).

Over 1,000 campaign supporters have sent letters to all federal party leaders urging action on climate change. As part of this effort, supporters are urging party leaders to support pollution pricing; support a clean, cross-Canada electricity grid; and protect people across Canada from climate impacts, among other items.

Dr. Mili Roy, Co-Chair of the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), said:

“Long after the current US government has gone, the climate crisis will remain the greatest human health crisis and existential threat of our time. While it’s no surprise the upcoming Canadian federal election has been dominated by the immediacy of unprecedented US threats against us, the environment is critically intertwined with every major ballot box issue ranging from Canadian sovereignty to the economy, jobs, housing and health. Whether we’re paying attention or not, the climate crisis continues to escalate, affecting nearly every facet of our lives. Voting for strong climate policies now will ultimately make or break our future and that of our children.”

Andrea Long, Senior Director of Research and Knowledge Mobilization at Generation Squeeze, said:

“This election, our kids are trusting us to do more – not less – to protect the planet’s health, because their lives and livelihoods literally depend on it. Let’s not betray that trust by abandoning our responsibility to clean up our pollution messes.”
